Domestic Violence Service of Central Queensland (DVSOCQ) held a candle lighting ceremony on Wednesday 6 May to raise awareness for Domestic Violence Month.

On dusk, over 100 people gathered at Emerald Botanic Gardens’ bush chapel in tribute to the 76 women who lose their lives at the hands of an intimate partner.

Simon Cupper, Kestral Mine Manager of Communities, emphasised the need for community awareness around domestic violence.

“For many years mining has been a male-dominated, white middle-aged industry. If we’re to move forward and change that… obviously the focus of tonight is domestic and family violence and there is nothing more destructive in community spirit, because robust communities can’t afford to have violence in the family,” he said.

“It doesn’t only destroy those involved, but also destroys communities which we need to be a part of. We all become weaker because of it.

“I firmly believe the most important first step for the mining industry, and I suspect communities as a whole, is one of awareness.

“Pushing this sort of thing under covers, behind the curtain, can only sustain this family violence and I think events such as (this) are important to break down the blanket of silence.”

Other speakers included Mayor Peter Maguire, DVSOCQ Service Project Manager Sue Manthey, and Emerald Senior Sergeant Graeme Reed.

May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
