Fr Hays was among the many
attending Juwarki’s opening ceremony, continuing his lifelong dedication to
supporting and working alongside the region’s Indigenous population. “NAIDOC Week was an excellent time
to hold the Juwarki opening, as well as being a wonderful opportunity to get
into the community and connect with a fabulous cross-section of our diverse
population in the Rockhampton and surrounding regions,” said Centacare
Rockhampton Centre Manager Kate Venables. Juwarki, one of a number of
amazing Indigenous community service organisations, serves as the hub for the
Michael Hayes Diversionary Centre, Cell Watch, Prison Aid, and QIADP (each of
which offers professional community and support services to Indigenous and
non-Indigenous clients). The name “Jawarki Kapu-Lug”,
originating from two different language groups (Darumbal and Torres Strait
Islands), means “Spirit Bird” (“Juwarki”) and “Safe Home” (“Kapu-Lug”). In many
ways the name is probably the best indicator of the way it fits into the
community by providing services for clients in a way that is immersed in
culture and family values. For more information about Juwarki
and the services on offer please the office on 07 4927 7508. |
