Centacare Bundaberg

Centacare Bundaberg provides several care services to people in Bundaberg and District. The Centre is sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton and strives to be a centre of compassion, respect, encouragement and empowerment.

Centacare Bundaberg was officially opened on 10 May 1989 as a
counselling service offering marriage, family and school counselling, and marriage education. Neighbourhood care was coordinated by Clare Swanton, and was supported by over 200 volunteers and Centacare became busy from day one.

We are grateful to John Novaksoki who left a bequest which enabled the parishes of Bundaberg to establish Centacare. The parishes and the diocese also contributed greatly to its establishment.

In 1991, Centacare received Government funding for the Community Options Program to help Aged people, younger people with disabilities and their carers. Other programs to assist aged people and people with disabilities were established soon after and these included, Community Aged Care Packages, Home Assist Secure, HACC Home Maintenance and Transcare.

Today, Centacare Bundaberg has 49 paid staff and 25 volunteers providing services to people who live in the Bundaberg, Burnett, Isis, Kolan, Perry, Monto, and Eidsvold Shires.

Centacare Services Available in Bundaberg

Transcare

Transcare provides suitable transport for the frail aged and younger people with a disability living in the communities of Bundaberg city and Burnett Shire. Transport can be arranged for respite, social, medical, allied health and shopping purposes. Eligible citizens wishing to avail themselves of the service need to register as members and meet the criteria set by the Home and Community Care Program (HACC). Contact should be made with the service coordinator by calling at Centacare or phoning between 7am and 12 noon on 4154 4960.

Bundaberg & District Home Assist Secure Program

Home Assist Secure receives funding from the Department of housing and offers assistance, advice and information on home repairs, maintenance, minor modifications and security. If you live in Bundaberg, Burnett, Kolan, Perry, Monto, Eidsvold and Isis Shires and are aged 60 years or over, or any age with a disability, living in your own home or renting privately you may be eligible for assistance. The main areas of assistance the program deals with are the issues of health, safety and security. An impartial security assessment by trained staff can provide consumer protection in the sensitive area of home security. You can contact the Home Assist program on 4153 1099.

Neighbourhood Care

Neighbourhood Care is a Home and Community Care funded program. Neighbourhood Care provides social support to frail aged people and people with disabilities and aims to improve people's quality of life through social contact. The social support service is provided by volunteer staff who undergo a police check and training. Neighbourhood Care is a flexible and individual service and services may be weekly, fortnightly, monthly or as needed.

Counselling

In the Counselling Program tertiary qualified counsellors provide a wide range of services including individual, family, group, grief, marriage, relationship, youth and school counselling. The costs of these services are based on income and fees are negotiable. We also have an Employee Assistance Program, marriage education preparation, and a Family Support Service. The Family Support Service is provided to families and individuals in Kolan and Isis Shires - this service is a free service. Interviews are conducted in a caring and confidential environment.

Community Care

The Community Options Program is designed to provide flexible Care Options to the frail elderly, younger people with disabilities and their carers. By offering a range of support services, the Community Options program helps prevent premature admission to care facilities and people are cared for in their own home.

Services include: Assessment, Social Support, Domestic Assistance, Transport, Respite and Personal Care. Referrals to the program can be made by anyone.

The Community Aged Care Packages program aims to assist frail aged people who require frequent and regular support services that wish to remain in their own homes.

The services offered vary, according to the client's needs and may include help with personal care, meals, shopping, medication supervision, laundry, domestic assistance and transport.

FEES: Government guidelines recommend a fee of 17.5% of the maximum basic rate of pension with adjustments depending on the client's financial circumstances.

The best way to apply for a care package is to contact the Aged Care Assessment Services (ACAS) on 4123 8710. General enquires are welcome.
